TLD stands for Top - Level Domain , also known as domain extension. There are different types of TLDs, namely:
- gTLD: generic TLDs, this includes domain extensions such as .com/ .org/ .nu. Generic TLDs do not belong to one specific country, but can serve different categories of websites.
- ccTLD: country code TLDs, the various countries fall under this, such as .nl/ .de/ .be/ .es reserved for countries, overseas territories and supranational structures such as theb European Union
newTLD: these are new gTLDs and may be requested from ICANN since 2012. Think of .shop/ .online/ .xxx
